Tesla Cybertruck Battery Capacity and Driving Efficency

Tesla did not release any detail information about the battery capacity and driving efficency of the Cybertruck, but we can cunch some numbers from the cost of ownership data.

TL;DR: The Single Motor, Dual Motor and Tri Motor version Cybertruck may have 75 KWH, 100 KWH and 185 KWH battery pack installed, respectively.

Let’s put these numbers into a table and do some simple calculation:

Monthly Energy Energy Rate Energy Distence Efficency
Average Pickup $130 (gasoline) $2.6 / Gal 50 Gal 1000 Mile 20 MPG
Tesla Cybertruck $40 (Electricity) $0.12 / KWH 333 KWH 1000 Mile 333 WH/Mile

Several assumpations have been made:

  • Assuming average gas price is $2.6/Gal, which is about right according to AAA Gas Prices.
  • Assuming average electricity price is $0.12/KWH, which is around there according to electricchoice.com
  • Assuming average driving distence per month is around 1000 Mile, which agrees the data from U.S. Departement of Energy

A simple calcuation shows a reasonable average efficency of 20 MPG for average 1/2 Ton pickup truck and 333 WH/Mile efficency for Tesla Cybertruck.

The 333 WH/Mile efficency for Tesla Cybertruck is a little bit surprice since it is slightly lower than the 350 WH/Mile efficency of the latest Model X. It is not an unreasable value since Model X and Cybertruck has very similar height and wind drag can be lower for cybertruck with the flat panel surface (without rearview mirror). Update Nov. 30th, 2019: Elon twitted today that “Cybertruck might might hit a 0.30 drag coeffieient” and it is higher than the 0.25 drag coefficient for Model X. Tesla might have some new drivetrain technology that much more efficent than the Raven drivetrain.

Keep in mind that these numbers are only for the Dual-Motro AWD Cybertruck. The efficiency might be slightly higher (assuming 10% increasing) for the Sing Motor RWD version and slightly higher (assuming 10% decreasing) for Tri Motor AWD version.

Single Motor RWD Dual Motor AWD Tri Motor AWD
Range 250+ Miles 300+ Miles 500+ Miles
Efficency 300 WH/Mile 333 WH/Mile 370 WH/Mile
Battery Capticty 75 KWH 1000 KWH 185 KWH

Well, the numbers look about right to me.
